Martyn (pictured above) acquired 4,000 postcards from the now closed Bury Bookshop and he has compiled some of these into his latest book, Bury St Edmunds Through Time, Revisited. We really enjoyed seeing Bury in the 1890s and comparing it with how it looks today. The biggest difference was that the modern streets were full of cars, still a novelty at the turn of last century. Lovely to see the market, AbbeyGardens, the Station and old pubs, still recognisable today!
Some surprises to all were a photo of a tank, given to the town after the first World War as a thank you to the town for fundraising which was eventually broken up for scrap and a weather vane on top of what used to be Mothercare at the top of St John’s street which depicts a stork with a baby!
